The simplest form of plane surface kite is the common two-sticker. Many light crosspieces of material inserted into knots in a line do well for a tail. Tails are effective because of their resistance to air. Those with only one flat surface must have tails hanging from the trailing edge to maintain balance. Among the best-known types are plane surface kites-such as the Malay and three-sticker (hexagonal)-and box kites. (This is Mike, yo.) I personally became involved because it was fun and something I found I could do fairly well. In the early days, the event developed because of the close friendships between the Japan Kite Association and the American Kite Association. The kites, rules, and techniques are different. Japanese styled kite fighting has been popular at American festivals for a number of years.
